There is some good and bad news when it comes to bicycle accidents in the U.S. According to reports, fewer children are dying in accidents; however, the number of fatal crashes involving adults appears to be on the rise.
U.S. News and World Report recently reported that a study analyzing federal data found that the death rate for cyclists younger than 15 fell by 92 percent between 1975 and 2012. However, death rate for cyclists between the ages of 35 to 74 tripled during this time.
Some experts think that an increase in the number of adults biking is behind the rise in fatal accidents. The growth among men between the ages of 25 to 64 who bike has increased significantly since 2000.
“[D]uring 2000-2012, the number of U.S. workers who traveled to work by bicycle increased 61 percent,” U.S. News and World Report said. The news outlet reported that in 2012, men made up 87 percent of all of these bike-related deaths in adults. Incredibly, fatal bicycle accident rates are now outpacing vehicle accident rates.

It is unfortunate that so many Americans are dying in bicycle accidents. In addition to the increase in the number of adult cyclists on the road, many accidents are probably the result of negligence on the part of drivers.
Cyclists should expect the same right to safety as other people on the road. Drivers can cause bicycle accidents by not adhering to local laws, or by participating in distracted and drunk driving. When they do this, they should be held responsible.
