Does New Jersey Have a Move-Over Law?

Did you know that New Jersey has a law requiring motorists to move over if they are approaching an “authorized emergency vehicle, tow truck, highway maintenance or emergency service vehicle” on the side of the road? The “Move Over Law” was enacted in 2009 as a way to protect police officers, firefighters, paramedics and EMS workers. The law requires that drivers reduce their speed and/or pull over to another lane, if there is a stationary emergency vehicle on the side of the roadway. In addition to emergency personnel, the law also pertains to “highway maintenance, tow trucks and official motorist aid vehicles displaying amber emergency lights.” Motorists who violate the law face fines of $100 to $500, which are determined by local municipal courts.
