Bard Agrees to $200 Million Vaginal Mesh Settlement

Bloomberg reported in August that C.R. Bard Inc. agreed to pay more than $200 million to resolve at least 3,000 lawsuits over defective transvaginal mesh implants. The news source said that the settlement will cover about a fifth of the outstanding cases the company is involved in with its mesh implants, which are used to treat incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Women who are involved in the settlement will receive about $67,000 apiece. The transvaginal mesh implants have been linked to infection, bleeding, vaginal scarring and painful sexual intercourse, and have been known to move inside victims. According to Bloomberg, a district court judge in West Virginia overseeing the Multi-District Litigation (MDL) urged companies involved to consider large-scale settlements.
