Is It Too Dangerous to Allow Self-Driving Cars on the Roads?

Two senators, one a republican and the other a democrat, are launching a bipartisan effort to speed up the process of putting self-driving cars and trucks on the road. According to The Press of Atlantic City, the two senators, one of whom is the chairman of the senate’s Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, are working on legislation that would remove obstacles preventing automakers from putting self-driving vehicles on the road sooner rather than later. Carmakers have cited federal safety requirements as slowing the advancement of self-driving technology. An example of a federal rule that automakers have complained are hinder the growth of self-driving technology is a requirement that autonomous vehicles still have steering wheels and brake pedals. Are Deadly Car Accidents on the Rise in New Jersey?

Deadly car accidents on the rise in New Jersey? Per preliminary New Jersey State Police data from 2016, the answer to that question is yes. The last week of 2016 saw six more people lose their lives in car wrecks in the Garden State to bring the total to 607 for the year. In 2015, there were 562 fatal traffic accidents in New Jersey. The rise in deadly auto crashes in New Jersey from 2015 to 2016 represents an 8 percent increase. In 2014, there were 556 deadly car wrecks in New Jersey, which resulted in a 1.1 percent increase in traffic deaths from 2014 to 2015.
