Why Are Adult Bicycle Accidents on the Rise?

There is some good and bad news when it comes to bicycle accidents in the U.S. According to reports, fewer children are dying in accidents; however, the number of fatal crashes involving adults appears to be on the rise. U.S. News and World Report recently reported that a study analyzing federal data found that the death rate for cyclists younger than 15 fell by 92 percent between 1975 and 2012. However, death rate for cyclists between the ages of 35 to 74 tripled during this time. Some experts think that an increase in the number of adults biking is behind the rise in fatal accidents. New Jersey Teen Killed in Truck-Bicycle Accident

Tragically, in June, a 13-year-old boy was killed in a truck-bicycle accident in Cresskill, according to NJ.com. The news source reported that the truck struck the boy as he was riding his bicycle down Grant Avenue, on his way to Cresskill Middle School. The teen was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after suffering severe brain injuries, according to police. A crossing guard allegedly witnessed the aftermath of the accident, saying the truck driver was yelling “oh my God, oh my God,” following the crash. The news source described the scene where the accident took place as a quiet suburban road. The boy’s death remains under investigation and charges are pending.
