We often blog about the dangers of distracted driving and how it can lead to fatal accidents—we now have statistics indicating just how many Americans are participating in this hazardous activity.
According to NBCNews.com, new information released by the National Safety Council estimates 21 percent of all vehicle accidents are attributed to cell phone use. The NSC also said it believes another 6 to 16 percent of these accidents may be attributed directly to texting.
“While the public understands the risks associated with distracted driving, the data shows the behavior continues — we need better education, laws and enforcement to make our roads safer for everyone,” Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the NSC said, according to NBCNews.com.
As the case below shows, if you injure or kill someone in a fatal accident, you can face both criminal and civil penalties. An example of a tragic texting while driving crash occurred in July 2014 when a 76-year-old Upper Township man was killed in an accident.
Reports indicate that Mihaela Reilly, 25, struck the man was he was walking. She was allegedly using her cell phone when the accident occurred.
Reilly has since been charged with “death by auto and violation of the law to protect public health and safety”, a charge aimed at people who are involved in distracted driving accidents. Reilly recently appeared in a Cape May courthouse where she pleaded not guilty to the charge. She is facing up to10 years in prison.
