What Should I Do If My Loved One Is Killed in an Escalator Accident?

Per the Tribeca Patch, the family of the woman who died in an escalator accident while inside the Oculus, which is the World Trade Center’s transportation hub, is considering filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the Port Authority. We reported on the Oculus escalator accident in February. The woman was killed when she fell off the escalator while reaching for her sister’s hat, which had just fallen. After falling off the escalator, the woman fell another 30 feet before crashing on the main concourse. She was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Why Is the Family Considering a Lawsuit? The Port Authority owns and operates the Oculus facility. The family has hired an attorney to investigate the incident to determine whether negligence led to the woman’s death. What Should I Do If I Am Stuck in an Elevator?

NJ.com recently reported on an incident that happened in an Atlantic City casino involving 14 people who were stuck in an elevator. Reportedly, the guests were trapped in the elevator for over six hours. After the elevator stopped working with occupants inside, hotel staff attempted to get the elevator working again. When attempts to get the elevator working again failed, the fire department was called. Firefighters used rope and a harness to rescue the people, pulling each of them 100 feet to safety. None of the 14 people were injured. There was no mention in the NJ.com article about what caused the elevator to stop working. How Common Are Escalator Accidents and Injuries?

When people think of escalator accidents and injuries, they often view them as freak occurrences that could never happen to them or their loved ones. However, according to the American Association for Justice (AAJ), people may be much more likely to be the victims of escalator injuries than they realize.
