Icy roads and snow have resulted in a number of multi-car accidents in New Jersey over the last month. Photo of vehicle accident

Recently, the Press of Atlantic City reported that snow and freezing rain resulted in a series of vehicle accidents in South Jersey. According to the news outlet, one person was killed when a vehicle crashed on the westbound bridge leaving North Wildwood. The Press reported that seven vehicles crashed on the same stretch of the bridge on the night of February 21.

“They were independent of each other but all within the same area on that bridge,” Middle Township Police Chief Chris Leusner told the Press. “North Wildwood Boulevard was extremely slippery. Responding units were having a hard time driving on that roadway. You had to be very careful walking around.”

With this in mind, if you are concerned about poor weather, you may want to avoid driving. Remember, even if the weather conditions outside are poor, if you are involved in a vehicle accident resulting in injuries, you can be held liable.

If you must drive in inclement winter weather, some safety steps that you can take that could help you avoid an accident include:

  • Avoiding distracted driving
  • Avoiding speeding
  • Using a seatbelt
  • Avoiding tailgating (keeping a safe distance between your vehicle and other cars on the roadway)
  • Being careful while braking

In addition, it may be a good idea to prepare for poor weather conditions by having salt bags in your vehicle to melt snow and ice, having tow chains and making sure you have plenty of warming clothing on hand, in case you are stuck.

Having a Vehicle Accident Investigated

Remember, if you have been injured or have had a loved one killed in a vehicle accident, even if the weather conditions were poor, you may want to speak to an experienced personal injury lawyer. An attorney could investigate your case and determine if the negligence of another driver contributed to your accident as well as explain your legal rights and options.
