Each year, several New Jersey residents lose their lives to boating accidents. Tragically, some of these accidents are avoidable, as reckless and/or intoxicated boat operators cause them.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, in 2013, there were 123 boating accidents in New Jersey resulting in eight deaths. This was an increase over 2012, when there were 115 boating accidents resulting in seven deaths.
“Operator inattention, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed and machinery failure rank as the top five primary contributing factors in accidents,” the Coast Guard reported. Additionally, alcohol use contributed to 16 percent of fatal accidents.
According to the Coast Guard, collisions with other recreational boats is by far the leading cause of accidents, but boats flooding or capsizing are the leading cause of deaths, followed by boats running into fixed objects like docks or bridges.
Sadly, three people were injured on July 26, when a boat they were riding in was involved in an accident on the Tuckahoe River in Upper Township. According to the Press of Atlantic City, the boat when airborne at some point before landing on a boat ramp.
The accident remains under investigation. Two of the injured people were airlifted to trauma centers, and the third was transported to a local hospital, according to the news outlet.
